THE NEW ERA OF INDEPENDENT STORYTELLING
By Stephen Cyrus Sepher
How creators, audiences, talent, and global partnerships are reshaping the future of film and television.
The film and television industry is changing.
For decades, success in Hollywood depended on access. Studios controlled development. Studios controlled distribution. Studios controlled marketing. Creators often spent years seeking approval before audiences ever had the opportunity to discover their work.
Today, that model is evolving.
Element 8 Media
Digital platforms have allowed creators to build audiences directly. International financing has opened new pathways for independent productions. Global production partnerships have become increasingly important. The lines between filmmaker, entrepreneur, producer, and media company are becoming increasingly blurred.
At the same time, audiences are consuming more content than ever before.
The challenge is no longer simply creating a film.
The challenge is building the relationships, audience, financing, and strategic partnerships necessary to bring meaningful stories to market.
Element 8 Media was formed with that reality in mind.
Founded by filmmaker and writer Stephen Cyrus Sepher, the company is focused on developing premium film and television projects for international audiences while embracing the changing dynamics of the modern entertainment business.
Rather than building around a single project, Element 8 Media is developing a slate strategy that combines commercial storytelling, international partnerships, direct audience engagement, and long-term relationship building across multiple territories.
The company’s current slate includes feature films and television projects spanning action, thriller, crime, and prestige drama genres.
Among the projects currently in development are Assassin of Prague, an international action thriller being developed in collaboration with India’s Contiloe Studios; Transit, a contained action thriller produced by veteran manager and producer Beth Holden-Garland; and The International, a premium television series inspired by the life and business career of Kirk Kerkorian.
The development of The International carries a unique connection to its subject matter. Executive producer Kenin M. Spivak worked closely with Kerkorian during his years at MGM, where he gained firsthand insight into the entrepreneur, dealmaker, and visionary who helped shape modern Las Vegas and one of Hollywood’s most influential entertainment companies. His experience provides a rare perspective on the business philosophy, leadership style, and decision-making that defined Kerkorian’s remarkable career.
The backgrounds of those involved with the slate reflect the increasingly interconnected nature of today’s entertainment business.
Spivak’s career spans entertainment, investment banking, publishing, entrepreneurship, and corporate leadership. His experience includes senior executive roles at MGM, involvement in major entertainment transactions, and decades spent building businesses across multiple industries. His perspective reflects the reality that successful media ventures require not only creative vision, but also strategic thinking, capital formation, and long-term execution.
Producer Beth Holden-Garland represents another critical side of the industry: talent.
Beginning her career at the William Morris Agency and later Propaganda Films, Holden-Garland helped guide the careers of actors including Matthew McConaughey, Jeremy Renner, Ray Liotta, Terrence Stamp, Simon Baker, and numerous others. Her work sits at the intersection of talent, filmmakers, studios, and audiences, demonstrating the enduring importance of relationships and career development in an industry increasingly driven by global competition.
At the creative level, Element 8 Media’s projects are being developed by filmmakers who recognize that while technology continues to evolve, audiences still respond to strong stories and compelling characters.
Sepher and producer Nazo Bravo represent a generation of independent creators who understand both the traditional foundations of filmmaking and the opportunities presented by emerging media platforms. As creators increasingly build audiences through podcasts, digital publishing, social media, and online video, the relationship between storyteller and audience continues to become more direct.
Recent success stories throughout the industry have demonstrated that audiences are willing to support original voices, particularly creators who spend years developing both their craft and their connection to viewers. The emergence of filmmaker-creators who first built audiences online before transitioning into mainstream film production suggests that the future of entertainment may be shaped as much by community building as by traditional gatekeeping.
For independent companies, this represents both a challenge and an opportunity.
The companies best positioned for the future may not necessarily be the largest. They may be the ones capable of combining storytelling, talent relationships, business strategy, audience engagement, and international collaboration into a single ecosystem.
That belief sits at the center of Element 8 Media’s long-term vision.
The goal is not simply to produce films and television series.
The goal is to build stories, partnerships, audiences, and opportunities that can travel across borders and connect with people around the world.
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, Element 8 Media intends to be part of that next chapter.
Element 8 Media also produces The Conversation Podcast, which has generated more than 40 million views across multiple platforms.
